Prudenville and the North Shore

Prudenville sits on the north shore of Houghton Lake along M-55, between the lake and Roscommon, which puts it about as close to our shop as anywhere we serve.

M-55. Most of what happens here happens on or just off M-55 — breakdowns, flats, and vehicles that have come off the edge in winter when the snowbanks make the road narrower than the map says it is. Getting one back on the pavement without tearing up a bumper is wrecker work and worth doing properly.

Seasonal cottage traffic. The roads running down toward the water off M-55 are a mix of pavement, gravel and seasonal surface. Plenty of them aren't maintained through the winter, and a vehicle that goes down one in February can need a winch to come back out.

Lockouts. Prudenville generates a lot of lockout calls, and a fair number of them are at boat launches and beach access points where somebody set keys down for a second. We open vehicles without damaging the door or the glass.

Being close helps. Because we're based between Roscommon and the lake rather than an hour away, the practical difference in Prudenville is that you're usually not waiting on a truck coming from another county.

M-55 traffic through Prudenville doesn't slow down much for a stopped car. Hazards on, get out on the side away from traffic, and wait off the shoulder rather than in the vehicle.
